2020 Medical Medical Student Scholarship Recipients

John J. Ulwelling Scholarship: Matthew Zeller

Matthew has been a leader and honors student at Western University of Health Science, College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific Northwest. He has served as class president from 2017-2019 and is now class representative. He has published research on sexual harassment in medical training and has participated in a variety of coaching and mentoring programs. Matthew has a passion for running, baseball and cycling. He plans to pursue a career in general surgery with an emphasis on clinical education and clinical leadership.

Joseph Bloom Scholarship: Rosa Ahn

Rosa is a student in the OHSU MD/MPH program and has a deep passion for population health and for the care of patients with psychiatric medical needs and complex social service needs and for health care in undeserved and under-resourced areas. She developed a program for improving clinical bedside teaching at OHSU and has provided continuous oversight and feedback to the clinical faculty. She is a passionate soccer player and started an intramural soccer program at OHSU. Rosa is planning to pursue a career in psychiatry with an emphasis on population health and evidence based medical practice.

Warren Jones Scholarship: Lai Hin “Kimi” Chan

Kimi is a first generation medical student who attended a health careers program while enrolled at Beaverton High School. During her high school career she developed a program called “Rebels with a Cause” to lobby to limit the licensure of hookah bars and to teach high school students about the dangers of nicotine addiction which has continued its work after her tenure. While at OHSU Kimi developed and ran a program to have medical students participate in cuddling and caring for newborn infants recovering from neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome in the OHSU Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Kimi has been a leader in helping minority students learn about careers in medicine and STEM fields. She is passionate about returning to serve her community as a culturally sensitive and bilingual primary care physician.

Walt McDonald Scholarship: Nga Nguyen

Nga Nguyen is passionate about mitigating the barriers that exist for patients in their contacts with the health system. As a trilingual physician in training (English, Spanish, Vietnamese) she is a leader in the US Asian Pacific Medical Student Association and was the coordinating lead for an extensive 2018 OHSU student led Health Equity Program held in Pioneer Courthouse Square. Her essays and her reference letters document how much she cares about truly understanding her patients’ fears, needs and experience. Nga plans to pursue a career in primary internal medicine with a focus on care of underserved and minority populations.
